I’ve in mind to open an office in the Middle East I dont now exactly where, most probably in Abu Dhabi or in Cairo, purchasing lots in Europe and selling them there, f.i. buying from you to Milan or Madrid (in transit) and than down, with all the regular papers relative to the goods. One thing you surely know, before I do my research, is if both in Cairo or Emirates is “permitted” by law the gold coins dealing,and if yes, what kind of documents must present to the Customs Authority at the entrance.     My mother comes from Northern Ireland and before her sister died she gave her a 1913 King George IV Gold Sovereign. My Mother is getting on in years, and asked me (her son) if I could tell what it was worth. I briefly tried to explain the factors of mintage, mint mark condition etc.. but lost her quickly. I am a collector of graded Silver Trade, Morgan & Peace dollars in MS63-65, so I was way out of my leauge. Do you have any idea what this coin would value. I have not seen coin and I am going on just a verbal description. She also mentioned that coin was quoted by a jewler as being 24K gold, I am not sure about GB gold coins, but legal tender US Gold coins are mostly .900 or .999, so if it is 24k I would think that would be a bad thing. Is it possible this coins was minted legal tender in 24k gold? What would be the composition of this coin in regard to the amount of gold. I want to provide my Mother with the most accurate information, because I feel if she goes to a local jeweler, or coin shop uneducated, it stands to good reason that she will be taken. Any help would be appreciated

    I’m afraid I don’t think it is a George IV sovereign, if it is indeed dated 1913, it should be a George V sovereign – (see this link for more information Georve V) George IV reigned from 1821 to 1830, and George V from 1910 to 1936. If you are sure it is a King George IV sovereign maybe you should have a look at the date again. Here is another link to a very useful site about gold sovereigns -goldsovereigns.co.uk that may give you more information.

    Plus the “modern” sovereign started being produced in 1817 and should be 22k not 24k. I rather think that it may be a fake, but if you go to the other site about Gold Sovereigns they may be able to help you further.

    The composition of the modern gold sovereign (ie from 1817) would be as follows:-
    Diameter 22.05 mm.
    Weight 7.98 grams.
    Alloy (Carats) 22
    Fineness (millesimal) 916.6
    Actual Gold Content (Grams) 7.315
    Actual Gold Content (Troy Ounces) 0.2354
