Edward VII Gold Sovereigns

Edward VII Gold SovereignsEdward VII gold sovereigns were struck in the following years - 1902 - 1910 even though his mother, Queen Victoria had died in January the year before. There was only ever one portrait of King Edward VII used for the sovereign, and therefore it has a tendancy to show signs of wear more quickly. (see below)

Note the initials of "De S" at the base of the neck. These initials stand for George William De Saulles who modeled the effigy of Edward VII without a crown. St George slaying the dragon is the standard scene on sovereigns of this era depicted on both the full gold sovereign and the half sovereign. Commemorative coins such as the £2 and £5 only had this design in 1902. King Edward's titles also expanded to include "BRITT : OMN" (all of the Britons) to encapsulate the ever growing British Empire. Also during 1908, with the Klondike gold rush in full swing, a new Mint was started in Ottawa, Canada to process the resulting gold.

Signs of Wear on a King Edward VII Gold Sovereign

When looking for signs of wear and tear on a King Edward VII gold sovereign, there are certain points that should be more closely examined.

Firstly, when examining the head of Edward VII, there will often be contact marks and general wear over a wide part of the portrait which is quite unlike other sovereigns where the wear would be focused on a much smaller area.

On the Obverse side here are some points that invite closer inspection.

Where the rein from the bridle crosses the horse's neck

The forequarters and rump of the horse

The dragon's body below its' neck

The strap and pin that holds St George's cloak together along with his chest

The helmet's crest

The upper band at the top of St George's boot

The "bloodline" on the sword

The muscle definition line along St George's upper thigh

The crest of St George’s helmet

Hello Anil I do not personally stock the sovereigns, your best course of action would be to go to eBay India direct and purchase through that site or purchase through one of the links on this site if you are able to buy in another country.
