Victoria Jubilee

Victoria JubileeDuring Queen Victoria's 50th year of reign in 1887 it was decided to commission an updated portrait showing Victoria in her middle years. This portrait was done by Sir Joseph Edgar Boehm and because people thought it showed the Queen as being miserable and scowling he came in for much criticism for portraying Queen Victoria in a rather bad light. The portrait shows Queen Victoria facing left, wearing a small crown and veil along with the J.E.B. at the bottom.

This portrait was used for 6 years until 1893 and had only the St George reverse. However, there are two different depictions of St George, from 1887 until 1891 the horse's tail was shorter than on the next depiction which was from 1891 until 1893 showing the horse having a longer tail, note that  1891 sovereigns show the horse with either the long tail or the shorter tail on the reverse. Note also that the ribbon has made a reappearance on the back of St George's head.

The date can be found below the "ground" (exergue)  with the mint mark just above the date, the initials B.P. which are that of the designer Bernardo Pistrucci can be seen to the right of the date.

The Victoria Jubilee Head gold sovereign was struck at the London, Sydney and Melbourne Mints.

    Hello

Your best option is to go to a numanist (specialist dealer in coins) who can examine the coins properly. It would be difficult to value them without seeing them “in the flesh” so to speak. Alternatively go to a reputable auctioneer and ask them

    thank you
