Victoria Old Head

Victoria Old HeadThe design for the last sovereign to be struck during Queen Victoria's reign was that of Sir Thomas Brock which was chosen on 27th November 1892 and went into production in 1893.

The design showed Victoria wearing a crown with a veil and the ribbon and star of the Garter. The only obverse used for this particular "old head" design was that of St George and the Dragon. The wording around the Queen's head now included IND:IMP which referred to her title of 1876, Empress of India.

It was during her reign that production began in Perth in the year of 1899. There are higher mintages recorded during this time because the new policy of "continuous recoinage" was introduced, whereby worn, old and damaged sovereigns were melted down to form new ones.
