Proof Sets
Gold Sovereign proof sets are usually struck for collectors as presentation pieces. The sovereigns are often struck twice using a specially prepared or polished die to give a much more defined, cleaner finish than that of normal gold sovereigns. They are usually distinguishable from normal sovereigns by the flat, highly polished background coupled with a matte or frosted finish to the raised "relief" parts of the design, very sharp edges and normally come boxed and/or in boxed sets. However there are certain coins that are completely matte such as the 1902 GB proof and on the other hand coins where the whole is mirrored - particularly the UK proof sets of the early 1970's.
Proof sets of coins are never in circulation and it is very rare that you will be able to purchase one at face value.
What areProof Sets?
A Proof set is a set of coins from every current denomination that is issued for that one year by a recognised Mint.
Proof sets come in long-sets - containing £5 and £2 coins and short-sets with the £5 and £2 omitted.
