Sovereign Cases
Sovereign Cases or Sovereign Purses were just the thing for keeping a few sovereigns about one's person in days gone by. Nowadays, sovereign cases are very collectable, usually made of silver or gold, as well as chain mail metal purses.
There were many designs including a rather clever one with room for your vesta matches at one end and space for a gold sovereign or two at the other. Some other sovereign cases were made so that you had room for some stamps, some could hold 3 sovereigns at a time although more normally the case was made to hold 2 gold sovereigns, many of the sovereign cases were fob cases in order to keep them safe. In later years such as the Edwardian and Victorian periods the cases and purses for sovereigns were more usually made out of leather, chain mesh and even mother of pearl.
