The Perth Mint

The Perth Mint was opened in 1899 2 years before the Australian Federation as the third branch of the British Royal Mint to refine the gold found in rich deposits in Coolgardie and Kalgoorlie and strike gold sovereigns and half sovereigns which were to be used as currency in the colony.
The Perth Mint is one of the oldest mints in the world which still produces coins from the original premises. Up to 2000, the Mint's refined fine gold output totaled 4,500 tonnes, representing 3.25% of the total tonnage of gold produced by humankind. This is about the current holdings of gold bullion in the United States Mint's Fort Knox Bullion Depository.[2] Until 1984, it also manufactured much of Australia's conventional coin currency. However, the Mint only produced gold sovereigns from 1899 to 1931. During that time there were over 106,000,000 sovereigns and almost 735,000 half sovereigns produced.
The Perth Mint differs from other mints in that its' weights and assays are accredited on the London Bullion Market which is the world's gold trade regulator. Also, the Perth Mint refines extremely pure gold, in fact the purest gold ever assayed by the Royal Mint which gives it the advantage of being accepted throughout the world.
The Perth Mint is Australia's oldest operating Mint, established in 1899 to mint gold sovereigns for the British Empire. The Perth Mint is owned by the Western Australian Government and is Australia's specialist precious metals mint, producing collector coins, gift coins, precious metal gift ideas and jewellery.
Today, the Mint continues to provide refining and other services to the gold industry and manufactures many coin related numismatic items for investors and coin collectors.
